Why did ASCA Develop the ASCA Access Pass?

To better understand how Alberta School Council Engagement (ASCE) grants are used a survey was prepared by the Alberta School Councils’ Association (ASCA) Fund Development Committee and distributed through ASCA’s distribution network on September 26, 2024, and closed on October 28th, 2024. The survey was also promoted on the ASCA Social Media accounts. Download the PDF Results Report to the ASCA Board.

Through this survey, ASCA learned that many parents struggle with what the Alberta School Council Engagement (ASCE) grant is, what it’s meant for, and how to appropriately use the grant. Here’s what we heard:

  1. Hard to get value for $500

“Every speaker either comes as volunteer or charges way more than $500!”

  1. Lack of Speaker and Topic Options

“We struggle looking for qualified speakers.”

“Provide a listing of options in each of the categories.”

“A list of ways other school councils have spent their grant would be useful.”

  1. Too Many Restrictions

“The list of what you CANNOT use it for is so extensive that it eliminates pretty much everything.”

  1. Low Engagement

“We had limited success hosting a workshop.”

  1. Unclear Communication/Confirmation About Grant

“Allow councils to know if they are receiving the funds as early as possible so we can plan.”

“Get the letter out early and confirm the funds are available.”

  1. New Council Chairs Feel Unsupported

“I really want to help my parent community as I am a new chair.”

As a result, ASCA has developed this subscription-based program to help you enhance, engage, elevate your school councils with exclusive and expert-led content right at your fingertips!
